Environmental protection – more than just lip service at the Student Services Organisation!
Our goal in terms of ecology is to do even more than others, to set an example and to be at the forefront, for example with pilot projects. The idea of sustainability must take hold on a broad front, both here and elsewhere, so that our planet and the creatures that live on it today and tomorrow have a good chance for the future. The Studierendenwerk launched concrete measures and projects many years ago.
Firstly, there is the conservation of precious drinking water through the retention and use of rainwater. Since early 1992, for example, the student residence at Henkestraße 35-47 in Erlangen has primarily used rainwater for flushing toilets and watering gardens. The rainwater that falls on the roof is collected and stored above and below ground in a biotopic pond and a cistern and fed into a pipe system for flushing toilets, which is of course strictly separated from the drinking water pipe. The results are impressive, as the proven savings in drinking water are considerable.
Of course, in addition to the examples listed above, many less spectacular construction measures, such as thermal insulation and emission control, including insulated glass windows, façade insulation and conversion to more environmentally friendly forms of energy, have also been carried out in recent years at a cost of millions.
However, if one wants to carry out an eco-output assessment for student residences in order to measure and compare the degree to which eco-ideals have been implemented in reality, user behaviour is also likely to be of considerable importance. Education and persuasion on both a large and small scale are therefore called for.
