Explanations on the limitation of the duration of residence and the application procedure for establishing a continuation tenancy agreement

All tenancy agreements for places in our student residences are issued for a limited period. The duration of residence in a student hall of residence is always limited and does not depend on the individual duration of study. Through the rotation principle, we want to offer as many students as possible the chance of a state-subsidized place to live.

Different duration of residence regulations apply to the different types of housing:

The following regulation currently applies to residents of single apartments and comfort apartments: First-time tenants who are first-year students (Bachelor/Staatsexamen) can receive a rental contract for 6 semesters. Continuation tenancies for a maximum of 2 subsequent semesters are only possible if the demand situation is assessed by the Studierendenwerk in such a way that a sufficient number of places can be expected for new students at the beginning of the semester.

Current regulations for residents of single rooms (with shared sanitary facilities), double apartments, group and family apartments:
First-time tenants who are first-year students (Bachelor/Staatsexamen) can also receive a tenancy agreement for 6 semesters here. Continuation tenancies for a maximum of 4 semesters, in exceptional cases 6 semesters, are possible.

Special regulations apply to families with children and students with physical disabilities.

Of course, all other requirements must also be met for the establishment of a continued tenancy, depending on the respective personal situation and the further course of studies.

Residents who, for example, have severely or repeatedly disturbed the harmonious coexistence in the student hall of residence or have persistently violated their tenancy obligations cannot expect a continuation of the tenancy agreement.

Special regulations apply to residents who have been admitted to a student residence via a special admission program or procedure outside the regular application procedure (e.g. special reservation program for students from the Erasmus, Socrates program of the EU).

Application procedure for the establishment of continuation tenancy agreements:
